The picturesque grounds at the Water Mill have inspired many romances.
The most notorious being in the 19th century. A daughter of the Mill owner fell in love with the mill labourer, Mr Scott. This was a highly unacceptable match and disapproved of by her father, Mr Way. The couple decided to elope and one night the daughter climbed out of the window of the Mill House and down a ladder. They rowed with friends to the mainland and caught the milk train to London. The couple persuaded a Parson to marry them and after the banns were read, were duly wed. But before they could leave the church Mr Way, her father, who had been in hot pursuit, burst into the church only to find that he was too late, and the marriage could not be undone.
The Water Mill continues to inspire many couples who choose to hold their wedding reception here.
